My toolkit

Here's what's actually in my kit today: the supplies and tools I reach for in my own practice, some from years as a designer, some new as I get further into illustration. Some links are affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. I only recommend things I genuinely use. I will keep evolving this list over time

Sketchbooks

Royal Talens Art Creations sketchbooks

My current favorite — I started using these this year. I like the smaller sizes for carrying around, and they come in a range of sizes and colors (I tend to grab the bold ones). The paper holds gouache beautifully, even though it's not technically mixed-media paper.

Painting, color & texture

Holbein Acryla Gouache

My favorite medium to paint with. I've collected these over the years, and I love that you can work in layers without them reactivating, which makes them fantastic for sketching and jotting down ideas too. You can find them as sets or choose your own colors, and right now I’m obsessed with Rebecca Green’s set.

Carand’ache luminance pencils

These are my go-to for final touches. Once I've laid down my gouache layers, I reach for these to add detail and texture, and they blend so beautifully over gouache that they tie the whole piece together right at the end. They're great sketching tools too, whenever I need one.

Neocolor II

My favorite for texture, and such a nice one to carry around. Add just a bit of water and they turn into watercolor paint, perfect for adding little details wherever I am. You don’t need too many to start with. I’d recommend a small set, then start purchasing the colors you use the most or are most drawn to.
